In 1986 the Perth Mint released the Gold Nugget series which continued until 1989. Then came about the idea to change the motif on the coin to something more symbolic and recognizable of Australia.
The kangaroo native to Australia, is representative of the nation’s forward progression, as the kangaroo can only travel forwards. Female kangaroos carry their infants around in their pouch until they are around 2 months old. Kangaroos are the most instantly recognizable wildlife symbols of Australia, which is why from 1990 onwards the series changed to the Kangaroo series and features a yearly changing image of a kangaroo on the reverse instead of a nugget.
The obverse side of the coin has remained the same portraying the Jody Clark likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the coin’s monetary denomination. The juxtaposition of the Queen’s head and kangaroo provides a unique insight into the history of colonialism between Britain and Australia. This a fascinating product with a story behind it, making it a paramount piece for collectors.
This is a very popular coin so be sure to secure yours quickly!
